You should be able to eat flexibly in a variety of settings. Going when recovery is not strong can lead to a relapse.   Choose Your College With Recovery in Mind When you tour colleges and think about where you would like to go, not only is it important to choose a great town and a college that offers your major of choice. It is also important to think about how the college can either support or hinder your recovery. Does the college offer counseling services? Is it close to home or far away? Do you find a smaller college to be more supportive than a larger school? Be Realistic About Your Schedule The first semester of college can be challenging for anyone. Keep this in mind as you choose your classes and create your schedule. Be honest with yourself about how many semester hours you can truly handle without getting burned out. You may also want to consider taking classes that you would consider less challenging this semester rather than committing to classes that will be stressful and take up a lot of time and energy. This is also true of your extracurricular activities. Be wary of signing up for too many commitments. If you find that you have extra time on your hands, you can always add things to your schedule at a later time. Set Up  Counseling Services Before You Go Even if youve been in recovery for a while, its a smart idea to locate a counselor (either on or off campus) and set up an appointment for after you arrive. If you begin struggling with your eating disorder (or other issues) you will already have someone to talk with about it. If things go smoothly, simply use the appointment to check in with someone locally. If you are currently seeing a therapist and/or dietician, make sure to arrange for your previous treatment team to forward records to your new counselor. This will help make the transition easier. Plan Your Meal Times Eating in a new environment can be challenging for many students in recovery. The food will be different than you are used to eating at home. Sometimes the cafeteria is only open for a limited amount of time, making it difficult to get a meal if you have a class that overlaps. Limited dining options and a lack of support at meals can also be triggering and stressful. Find out what your on-campus and off-campus dining options are beforehand. Seek out supportive people to eat with on a regular basis and work with your  dietician to create possible combinations of foods. You may also want to consider the types of foods that can be easily stored in your room. If you struggle with binge eating, you may want to plan to only purchase limited amounts of non-triggering foods to keep on hand. Identify Potential Challenges   Work with your therapist, dietician or a support person to try to anticipate potential challenges to your recovery. These will certainly include overt symptoms of your eating disorder but may also include things that might not be so obvious such as skipping breakfast or beginning to feel anxious and/or depressed. You may be more active than you were in high school. Many college students do a great deal of walking. Keep in mind you may need increased food to fuel for this increased activity level.   Seek Support One of the most helpful ways that clients report being supported in recovery is to connect with supportive people. Going to a  college where you may not know anyone can make a connection difficult. Plan ahead of time to call or Skype regularly with your family and friends back home. Seek out people to connect with at school. These may be people you meet in your dorm, classes or in various student groups. It can be anxiety-provoking to put yourself out there and make new friendships, but you are worth the effort! Regardless of how much planning and effort you make to prepare for your transition to college, it still may be difficult. And, you still may experience a relapse. Dont beat yourself up. If this happens to you, make an appointment and get into treatment again. The faster you begin addressing the issues, the faster youll be back in recovery. Note to Parents If you are a parent of a college student who has had an eating disorder, a college contract is recommended. This is an agreement between the parents and the student that specifies conditions required for the student to be able to remain in college (things like maintaining a healthy weight, not engaging in eating disorder behaviors  and having regular weight checks). The contract should also specify what the parents will do if these conditions are not met (for example, increase oversight, bring the child home, etc.). Having a contract that both you and your child agree on can help maintain eating disorder recovery and give you some peace of mind to what is, undoubtedly, also a difficult transition for you.

I presently work for Cessna Aircraft Company in Bangalore. I have about 6 years of work experience in Design, Analysis and Manufacturing. Ive always wanted to do a program that has a right balance between technical and management side of business. Something like a dual degree program. My initial Google search pointed me towards the MITs LGO (Leaders for Global Operations) and this happened to be my dream school. There were a couple of other schools like the Michigan Ross Tauber Institute and Kelloggs MMM program and of course the PGPEX-VLM program. Though I work as a part of the Integrated Supply Chain in Cessna, Im not involved in making Supply Chain decisions. This is when I gave a thought of doing a MBA and PGPEX-VLM happened to be the right program for me. Post MBA, I would wish to venture into the Supply Chain side of business and Im looking at few consulting positions as well. One of the reasons I chose Supply Chain is that, irrespective of industry, there are always challenges. I am highly interested in Defense Procurement as well. Accepted: Can you talk about your experience with online courses? How has taken MOOCs influenced your Executive MBA goals? Arun: Online courses are really cool. It all started when I saw a TED talk show of Daphne Koller (Founder of Coursera). Being a working professional, Ive always felt the need to learn and keep learning. These MOOCs are a boon for working professionals. It is such a great platform to take the worlds best course, right at your home, at your convenience, and for free!! I signed up for a couple of courses from Wharton, University of Michigan and Stanford and I was awed. The same course is taught by the same professors for regular full time MBA students at top b-schools though a little variations do exists considering class size. Im the kind of a person who first likes to try and then decide. I took these MOOCs to have a firsthand experience of what to expect in a b-school and whether the subjects/concepts resonate with my thinking. It did. So, taking these MOOC has had an influence in my decision to pursue an MBA program. Accepted: What would you say was your greatest challenge in the application process? What steps did you take to overcome that challenge? Arun: PGPEX-VLM is one unique program and so is the application. Apart from regular MBA application elements like test scores, essays, and interviews, PGPEX-VLM has a aptitude test that tests the candidates on the fundamentals of Engineering (after all, it’s a techno-managerial program). The aptitude test had a wide range of topics from higher mathematics, to differentiation and integration to matrices and statistics to mechanical engineering to electronics to electrical engineering to even computer science concepts. Pretty much everything that falls under engineering. This was my greatest challenge. So, I started reviewing my engineering fundamentals and my GRE preparation helped me the verbal and quant section. I also took help from my fiancà ©, Gayathri, who is pursuing her Masters in Electronics engineering to review electronics and electrical engineering fundamentals :). So, I had taken lot of time to review engineering fundamentals. Another challenging area for me was essays. There were 2 essays and this was a challenging part for me. Firstly because I was very new to this and then there were tons of consultants who supposedly offer services for reviewing and editing essays for top b-schools. Going through the testimonials of these essay editing admission consultants was quite intimating. The only investment I did was I bought MBA Admission for Smarties by Linda Abraham. I think instructions in that are pretty clear and straightforward. I read that book a hundred times before I drafted my essays and kept fine-tuning it for a month. I showed it to my family and got their feedback. My father-in-laws feedback proved to be highly useful and many changes were incorporated based on his suggestions. So, to review essays, one need not really take help of essay editing services. Family and friends could offer the best critique and sometimes bring in a fresh look that sometimes others easily miss out. Accepted: Can you share some EMBA application tips with our readers? What are some tools or resources that you used to help guide you through the process? Arun: 1. Self Introspection: Before choosing to do a MBA/EMBA program, a lot of introspection is to be done. There is a significant amount of cost and time involved in a MBA program. So, it’s worth to do introspection till we find clear answers. Just keep asking yourself if an MBA is something that you really want to do. Why MBA? Why not something else? Why now? What would happen if I didnt do an MBA? This type of introspection and self-interrogation could lead to some clear answers. 2. B-School Selection Matrix: We all know that top b-schools follow a holistic approach in selecting candidates for their programs. Like, no admission decision is made solely on GPA or GMAT score or essays. Similarly, while choosing a program, as candidates, we need to have a holistic and a realistic approach, not just ranking of the b-school. Various factors to consider for a b-school before joining is whether it’s a one-year MBA or a two-year MBA, location (India or abroad), class size, class diversity, post MBA goals, Program Fit, cost of the program, return on investment. I had written a blog post titled B-School Selection Matrix in which I evaluate various b-schools of my choice and make a qualitative decision. It’s like, I design my own personalized b-school rankings. 3. Profile Building: The decision to pursue an MBA most likely shouldnt be an overnight decision and it’s not possible to build an MBA profile overnight. I think profile building should be the first step in preparing your b-school application even ahead of taking the GMAT. You just need to get into the league of MBA applications, be aware of various schools, follow admission officers blogs and even applicant and student blogs, sign up for newsletters, etc. I had written a blog post titled MBA profile Building on this. Those who have weak communication can sign up for few courses to improve communication. Those having problems with GMAT should change their browser home page to www.gmatclub.com. Those who havent had a chance to display leadership skills at their workplace, may choose to organize a few events or show leadership skills in other events, like even sports. So, profile building is a long evolving process and one must start early and invest time on this. When it comes to resources, I had purchased MBA Admission for Smarties by Linda Abraham. This book is great. I had also purchased Beyond MBA Hype by Sameer Kamat. There are some great resources out there on the net. I religiously followed Accepted.com blogs and used to attend several webinars. So, following these blogs, network of current students, following the newsletters of your target schools, following admission officers blog – these are some priceless resources and one must make use of these as much as possible. Dr. Wilson and his team conducted a survey of more than 950 people where he showed photos of the faces of black and white men and asked them to judge them by height, weight and strength. Although participants could only see the persons face, they concluded that black men were bigger and stronger than white men although both black and white subjects were the same size. These let to prove Wilsons theory that people tend to see black men as more of a threat than the white men. The study also concluded that the darker the skin of the individual was and the more stereotypical black facial features he had, the more he was associated with being larger. In his research, Dr. Wilson concluded that the false labeling of a black mens larger size contributed to an officers decision to shoot the individual since he was seeming as a bigger threat. This misconception of black men that society has made, puts the life of men of color in heightened dangers when confronting a police officer. 2012-2016 data reports that black males receive on average 19.1 percent longer sentences than while males who committed the same crime. This study found that judges tend to give shorter sentencing to white males than they do black males without advice from the prosecutor. 21.2 percent of black males were less likely to receive a reduce sentence from a judge without request from a prosecutor. While with the request from the prosecutor to reduce the sentence given, black men still receive a sentence 16.8 percent longer. America has a history of seeing black men inferior to white men. From the time of slavery to present day, American has blanketed its white citizens, leaving their minorities unprotected. Perhaps Americas culture still looks at black men to be less than white men, therefore making them pay longer, harsher sentences for the same crimes a white man commits. A conflict theory would be that police need to protect themselves and others against all situations that could put their lives, or the lives of others is danger. By thinking this way and at times making decisions out of fear, they endanger the life of the party or parties involve. This can be very dangerous, harmful and even deadly to the individual involved in a police altercation. It is in human nature to defend yourself when one feels threatened, especially when you feel like you have done nothing wrong. We give officers the power to rule over us and they at times forget that they we are just trying to keep ourselves safe, free of harassment. It seems like today the country is very divided for various reasons. Many people have never faced an unfair police altercation. Many people who are not people of color have never felt what it feels like to be looked down upon or be profiled by authority because of the color or their skin. These people who have never experienced such things cannot allow their sociological imagination to see what the minority is facing; to get into their shoes for a day and see the hardships and unjust treatments they face simply by being of color and walking around a predominantly white neighborhood or fancy store. When we dont allow ourselves to see life in another perspective, the people suffering dont receive the sympathy and justice they deserve. Many people fail to see police racially profiling. Many fail to responsibly admit that police are not always right in the way they handle situations and abuse their power of authority. If we cant get in each others shoes, we will remain divided and minori ties, especially black men will keep falling to their death under the care of police officers. Another example of unfair sentencing is Bill Cosby. I am not here to argue whether he did commit the crimes of sexual abuse he was accused of or not. The purpose of this paragraph is to compare how society handled the accusations held against Cosby, a black man versus the same accusations held against Brett Kavanaugh, a white man. Both men were accused of sexually harassing and assaulting women back in their earlier years of their lives. Bill Cosby received very little support from the media and the public while a great deal of people stood behind Kavanaugh, calling his accuser a liar. Bill Cosby was found guilty of all charges and sentenced to prison. His whole life and extensive career ruined within months while Kavanaugh rose to be a supreme court judge. This is another case of racial profiling, intentionally or not. We cannot give two men accused of the same crimes, completely different sentences. Why is it that one mans career was ruined while the other rose to the top? Both sho uld have paid for their crimes equally. Think back of earlier on the paper on how society sees a black man. In conclusion, both minority men and women receive longer and harsher sentencing than their white counterparts for the same crimes committed. They are more often victims of unjust and unnecessary police force and brutality. Often ending in the premature loss of life of an innocent until proven guilty individual. We are a country that prides itself in many things, one of them being their justice system where everyone has the right to an equal and fair trial. Our most vulnerable citizens often fall through the cracks of the justice system, being sentenced to years, even life in prison for the same crimes committed by white men. Some might not even make it to trial at all because they die during the arrest. Our society needs to get into the shoes of those who are falling victims. See the struggles and lack of justice people of color face simply because of the color of their skin and what stereotypes society believes those darker characteristics make the individuals fall on. Power is not something that should be abused. Ones race cannot be the factor that sets the tone of your experience with law enforcement. A simple traffic stop should not turn deadly because the person is a person of color and are perceived to be bigger and more dangerous.

Humes Affirmation Analysis Essay David Hume makes a strong affirmation in section IV of an Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding. Hume states, I shall venture to affirm as a general proposition, which admits of no exception, that the knowledge of this relation is not, in any instance attained by reasonings a priori; but entirely from experience.In this statement, when discussing knowledge of this relation, Hume is referring to the relation between cause and effect. This argument can easily be dismissed as skeptical, for it puts all knowledge of this sort in doubt. However, Hume does not hastily doubt that this knowledge is not a priori, as a skeptic would. Instead Hume offers a sound argument as to why cause and effect knowledge can not be a priori, and thus his argument is not skeptical at all. Before Hume commits himself to this affirmation, he establishes several things first. He explains that all reasonings concerning matter of fact are founded on the relation of Cause and Effect. In support of this, Hume explains that, if asked, any man believing in a matter of fact would give as a reason in support of this fact, some other fact. It is from this that Hume concludes that all reasonings concerning fact are of the same nature. It is here that one continually assumes that there is a connection between the current fact and that, which is inferred from it. Furthermore, Hume states where there nothing to bind them together; the inference would be entirely precarious.Meaning, any matter of fact is supported only by another matter of fact, and if this connection is removed, one is left with a fact that is completely dependent. In addition, any fact will ultimately be dependent on a primary fact, which in turn is founded on cause and effect. It is only after Hume establishes this that he affirms that knowledge of this relation is never attained by reasonings a priori. Knowledge based on cause and effect, for Hume, relies entirely on human experience, and it is for this reason that it can not be a priori. Hume does not blindly state this proposition, he supports it with several examples that I find irrefutable. He suggests that no man when presented with gunpowder can imagine the explosion that can follow. The same is true when discussing the consequences of releasing a stone from ones hand. Without prior knowledge, it would be impossible to predict that the stone would fall to the ground.
